BALDWIN – RICHARDS FOUR COUNTIES BOYS TOURNAMENT 2024
The Worcestershire U18 boys’ team arrived at Trentham GC early on a gloomy autumn morning. The tournament is played over 2 days and involves playing 4 foursomes matches against each of the other counties - Staffordshire, Warwickshire and Gloucestershire.
Three of the squad were making their debuts in the tournament and all but 2 will be available for next year. The team made a solid start on Wednesday afternoon winning the first 2 matches, but narrowly losing the second two matches to a strong Warwickshire line up, with the match ending in a 2-2 draw.
The second day started in high spirits and with the pairings staying the same the team were confident of trying to win the trophy, however, Staffs were reeling from their day 1 defeat and were in determined mood. Two of the matches ended in a half and one, which Staffs won on the 18th, meant staffs were victorious 3-1.
Unfortunately, this meant Worcs were unable to win the trophy as Gloucs had won both of their matches. Despite this the Worcs boys were determined to end on a high, so with the pairings being mixed up the team went out and played some of their best golf of the competition against a very strong Gloucs team who had easily despatched the other 2 counties. With both counties, winning two games each in a high quality contest resulting in the match ending 2-2.
That meant Worcs finished third overall with 2 draws and 1 defeat, congratulations to Gloucs for winning the tournament.
I would like to thank Staffs with the organisation of the event, and especially Gareth Shaw for his efforts in bringing it all together. The hospitality at Trentham Park Golf Club was excellent and my thanks go to the catering staff and the grounds team for producing the course in excellent condition. As always, my thanks go to Alex Band, Luke Perry and Mark Evans for their continued assistance with the team and to County President John Whitehead for attending the event and offering his support that was much appreciated.
We all look forward to next year’s event, which will be hosted by Gloucs at Forest Hills GC.
