4 Counties Tournament Match Report

MIDLAND BOYS FOUR COUNTIES TOURNAMENT

MATCH 1 - WORCESTERSHIRE V GLOUCESTERSHIRE

The annual Midland Boys Four Counties U18 competition got underway with Worcestershire hosting the event at Cleobury Mortimer GC with Worcestershire, Gloucestershire, Warwickshire and Staffordshire doing battle over the 2-day event.

Due to a busy Easter schedule, Worcestershire decided to give some invaluable U18 experience to a number of players, with four making their U18 debuts. Our tournament got off to a tough start against Gloucestershire in very challenging wet and windy conditions. Although some of the games were tight at one stage, wins from our Captain Cassius Blake (2&1) and an exceptional performance from debutant Alex Perry (6&4) were not enough to get us our first points, despite everyones amazing efforts as Gloucestershire eventually ran out winners by 6 pts to 2 pts.

MATCH 2 - WORCESTERSHIRE V WARWICKSHIRE

With the weather, having, deteriorated from the first day, and winds reaching in excess of 40 mph, was always going to be a tough test for all teams on day 2, as this proved the case. Worcestershire spirts were high and they were determined to put on a good show. Despite wins for Alex Perry (2up), Joe Lonergan (2up) and Callum Jones (3&2) and a good half from Cassius Blake, Warwickshire just shaded the match by 4.5 pts to 3.5 pts.

 MATCH 3 - WORCESTERSHIRE V STAFFORSHIRE

With the course now virtually unplayable and no sign of the winds easing, so it was decided by all counties that in the best interest of all the players that the tournament should be abandoned with no further play and all counties awarded half a point for the final round of matches.

I have never seen such atrocious conditions for playing golf before and must praise all of our players for their perseverance and resilience, they are all winners in our eyes. A special mention must go to Cassius Blake for leading and encouraging such a young and inexperienced team and to Alex Perry for his 100% record playing in his first ever U18s match.

Final Result

1. Staffordshire 4.5 pts

2. Gloucestershire 2.5 pts

3. Warwickshire     2.5 pts

4. Worcestershire 0.5 pts

I would like to thank Ian Griffiths the Worcestershire County Secretary for organising the event and ensuring its smooth running for the 2 days.

My thanks also go to all the parents, the Worcestershire officials of Ian Rone and John Whitehead and especially Mark Evans and Luke Perry who supported the team over the two-day event in such dreadful conditions.

Also our thanks to Cleobury Mortimer GC for hosting the event and their exceptional hospitality throughout.
