Another narrow defeat for our young U18’s team
The U18’s were playing their penultimate match of the season away to S&H at Ludlow GC. It was a glorious day in Shropshire and our young Worcestershire team were eager to perform well again.
The morning foursomes was hard fought but the early momentum was clearly with the home team. Our captain Cassius Blake partnered George Stephens in what was a very strong pairing. Home advantage was certainly the key as any shots that were just off the fairway were ending up in deep rough and the Worcs pair found themselves down early on. The boys showed their class on the back nine with some excellent shots but the home pair held on for the point. Next up was a Gaudet Luce pairing of Mark Hewlett Jnr and Teddy Fee. This was another close match that saw Worcs down early on. After a fantastic chip on the 9th from Teddy Fee the boys pulled the deficit back but it was short-lived after S&H won the par three 13th to extend their lead and finally go on to secure the win. Next up was our trusted pairing, Alex Perry and Harry Evans. With our boys 2 up through the turn, this point was never in doubt and we secured our first point on the 17th green. The final match was the closest foursomes match of them all. Tom Griffiths and Oliver Badger played some fantastic golf and with the lead swaying both it was unfortunately the home team that secured the win on the last.
With S&H leading the morning foursomes 3-1 Worcs knew they had to win the afternoon session to secure the victory. George Stephens was out first and Cassius Blake out second. Both matches were very close and just like the morning round the Worcs players seemed to do better on the back nine than the front. The matches were both closed out on the 17th green with 2&1 defeats. Mark Hewlett Jnr went out third and after great up and down on the 10th this match was all level. It remained a close match and with Mark 1up on the 18th he managed to chalk up our first singles point of the day. Next up was Harry Evans who chalked up our biggest singles win of the day. It was a very dominant display and a great birdie on the 12th put Harry four up and he went on to win 4&3. Alex Perry secured another point at U18 level with a gritty performance. After a 15ft putt to secure a half on the 16th green Alex quickly followed It up with two classy up and downs on the 17th & 18th hole to secure a very narrow 1up victory. Ollie Badger out at 7 played some fantastic golf and found himself up through 14 holes. It was a case of déjà vu as the S&H player fought back but with Ollie 1 up on the 18th tee he showed great resilience to hold the winning putt to win 2up. In the final match Tom Griffiths found himself dormy 4 down but despite him fighting back to win the next two holes It was the home team that took the final point.
Thanks to all the parents who supported the team. My thanks also go to Kevin Fee, Luke Perry and Mark Evans for their valuable contribution and support throughout the day. A special thanks to Doug Parry who acted as starter and to Ludlow Golf Club for being fabulous hosts and in particular the catering staff for keeping us fed throughout the day.
