Match report for the 2nd team v Warwickshire

The team assembled for the first match of 2023 against Warwickshire who chose to play at Stratford Oaks Golf Club which took an enormous amount of rain the day before, so the conditions under foot was not great but surprisingly the greens were  firm, quick and very smooth.

I sent Phil Krone and Giles Blakely out in the first foursomes and they duly brought home the first point winning 6&5. Simon Green and James Howl-Newton continued where they left off from last year winning on the 18th green (1UP). Juniors Cassius Blake and Mark Hewlett Jr managed an important half point in the last match. The score from them was even more impressive as Cassius found out not long into the match that his mother had been rushed into hospital in an emergency. I met him at the back of the 18thgreen, I thanked him, checked he was ok as he quickly left for the Hospital.

So, two and a half points each at lunch, I put my faith again in Phil Krone by sending him out first in the singles, wanting to show that he maybe should have been picked for the first team he played some amazing golf from a person of his age by thrashing his opponent 8&6. Another junior Mark Hewlett Jr went out quite high up the order and he wasn’t fazed with the responsibility by winning 3&2. Wins from Matt Brookbanks (4&3) and James Howl-Newton (2UP) got us to 6 ½ points, John Cullen and Simon Green got important halves to secure a halved Match.

I’m pleased to say that Cassius’s mum is ok and on the mend, to carry on playing golf to bring home a half point show tremendous courage and commitment and I thank him so much for that.
