Another narrow defeat for our U18’s team
The U18’s were playing their 2nd match of the season home to S&H at Sapey GC. It was a glorious day and our young Worcestershire team were eager to perform well again even with just seven players available.
Worcs most experienced pair of Tom Blizzard and Tom Griffiths led the way in the morning foursomes and were rarely in trouble winning 4&3. The next two matches were extremely tight and could have gone either way, both toing or froing from hole to hole. The standard of golf was high as proved when Noah Wilson (making his County debut) chipped in on the par 3 17th for birdie only to watch the S&H team do exactly the same for a half. Unfortunately, for Worcs both games ended up losing 1 down on the 18th which the lads didn’t deserve.
With the last match being forfeited due to Worcs only having seven players the team went into lunch trailing 1-3. This did not dampen the spirits and Worcs were in determined mood to overturn the deficit.
The two Tom’s led the way with convincing wins 4&3 and 3&2 respectively. Harry Fall played sensible match play golf and ran out winning his match 4&3. Joe Lonergan was in scintillating form and never gave his opponent any chance in winning 8&7. Lewis Tolley and Euan Choi both fought hard throughout the day and never gave up but both just coming up short in hard fought matches.
Game of the day had to be Noah Wilson, he was up against the S&H captain, both players playing extremely good golf and there was never more than 1 shot in the whole match. Noah held his nerve on the 18th green in front of a packed clubhouse balcony to win the hole and half his match.
With the 8th match being conceded it meant Worcs won the singles 4.5 to 3.5, but meant they lost the match overall 5.5 to 6.5. Congratulations to S&H.
We are extremely proud of all the lads for their efforts, attitude and belief that they could win the match even being a player short. They came so close.
Thanks to all the parents who supported the team. My thanks also goes to Luke Perry for his valuable contribution and support throughout the day and to Sapey Golf club for being fabulous hosts and in particular the catering staff for keeping us fed throughout the day.
