Worcestershire U18s vs Staffordshire U18s

U18’s so close again.

The sun was shining down on what was a glorious summer’s day in the heart of Staffordshire, with Aston Wood Golf club kindly hosting this U18s league match against a good Staffordshire team.

When the morning foursomes draw came out the teams looked evenly matched with the anticipation of some close games, this indeed proved to be the case with all four matches staying tight throughout. Worcs took the opening point when George Stephens held his nerve to hole a 5 footer on the final green to half the hole and win the match 1up with his partner Tom Griffiths. The second match had the ever reliable pairing of Mark Hewlett and Teddy Fee, both boys looked relaxed and were never in trouble throughout their match but some dogged resistance from the Staffs pair meant the game was never over, and a birdie 4 on the last by Staffs meant the game finished all square. The last two matches out were nip and tuck all the way round but unfortunately for the Worcs pairs they both ended up on the wrong side of narrow defeats, 3&2 and 2&1 respectively.

After the morning foursomes the score was 2.5 to 1.5 in favour of Staffs. Worcs not being phased by this still had the belief they could turn the match around.

We did not have to wait long for our first point of the afternoon with George Stephens easing to a 4&2 victory at the top of the order. Two more wins followed by the impressive Joe Lonergan (2&1) and Teddy Fee (3&1). Soon after, Mark Hewlett delivered the biggest win of the day with an awe-inspiring 6&5 win, to not only win his match, but also securing the Midland boys order of merit title in the process. Many congratulations to him.

Unfortunately, after some battling performances Worcs were not quite able to get the additional point needed to win the match but certainly was not down to any lack of effort in such hot conditions.

Final result - Staffordshire 6.5 Worcestershire 5.5

Congratulations to Staffordshire who also won the West Midlands league title with the win and we wish them well in the Midlands final against Cambridgeshire.

Our thanks goes to everyone at Aston Wood GC. The course was in immaculate condition, the catering staff for the excellent food. Special thanks must go to Alex Band for all his help and support on the day.
