Match Report V Gloucestershire U16’s

14th July 2024

Rodway Hill Golf Club

Warm sunshine greeted the squad for this re-arranged friendly at Rodway Hill Golf Club. With two U14’s making their debut at this higher age level, and a team consisting of 10 players,  it was an ideal opportunity to experiment with pairings and provide the new lads with an opportunity to gain some valuable experience of playing foursomes’ golf.

The team was led off by the team’s captain, Oliver Badger, who was partnered by Hayden Sarfo for the first time this year. The Worcestershire pair were unable to recover from the strong start made by the Gloucestershire boys eventually losing 2 down.  The second pairing saw the experienced partnership of Harry Evans and Alex Perry take control of their match early on. The pair never looked like losing running out eventual 6&5 winners.

Our third pairing saw the Hagley duo of Euan Choi and Max Wesley take on the course that was deceptively tricky in places, unfortunately they were unable to contain a strong Gloucestershire pair who ran out 7&6 winners.

The 4th pairing saw Harry Fall partner Logan Lawless who was making his U16’s debut. Despite their impressive golf the Worcestershire boys were unable to impose themselves on the match losing 3&2. The final pairing of Jake Jeff-Johnston and U14’s Captain, and U16’s debutant, Nicholas Campbell battled hard, winning 4 consecutive holes around the turn but were unable to recover from the impressive start made by their Gloucestershire opponents.

A 4-1 deficit at lunch meant there was a lot to do in the afternoon singles.

Unfortunately, things did not improve and although many of the games were tight entering the last few holes we could only amass 3 points in the afternoon.  Hayden managed to claim a creditable half against a strong opponent as did Jake bouncing back well from the morning session.  Harry Fall never looked troubled in his match winning 5&4. Congratulations to Logan who managed to secure his first singles point at this level with an impressive 3&2 victory.  Despite the overall result there were some positives to take from the day and into our next league match later in the month.

A special thank you to everyone at Rodway Hill for making us so welcome, in particular Club Captain Steve Yemm, who looked after us so well and acted as starter on the day and Liam Barkin and his team in the clubhouse for the refreshments throughout our visit. Finally, thanks to Kevin Fee and Ian Griffiths for their support and assistance on the day
