Worcestershire welcomed Shropshire & Herefordshire and Staffordshire to Dudley Golf Club for the annual U16’s tri-match on a warm summer morning to defend the trophy.

The foursomes were led off by the experienced pairing of Alex Perry and Harry Evans, unfortunately they were unable to recover from a poor start against strong opponents losing both matches.  Our second pairing of Harry Fall and Noah Wilson started well and were able to capitalise against S&H winning 3&2, a spirited fightback from the Staffordshire pair saw this match finish even.

Freddie Wilson and Oskar Nielson, who was making his debut at U16’s level, were the third pairing and were always in control against their Staffordshire opponents winning 6&5; the match against S&H was a tighter affair but the Worcestershire duo managed to hold on for a 2&1 win maximising their return from the morning session.  The fourth pairing of Max Wesley and Euan Choi battled hard but were unable to gain anything from either of their matches, despite this Worcestershire found themselves still in both matches at lunchtime.

The afternoon singles, played in baking heat, turned out to be a tough challenge on the tricky undulating course.  Harry Evans managed to secure a win and an “all-square” in his matches. Noah Wilson comfortable won his match against Staffordshire. However, the performance of the day was from Oskar Nielson who secured 1.5 points in the afternoon session and remained undefeated on the day.  Overall a tough day for the team but one which they will learn from.

The final results on the day were:

                                Worcestershire 4 pts      v     Staffordshire 8 pts

                                Worcestershire 3.5 pts   v     Shropshire & Herefordshire 8.5 pts

                                Staffordshire      4.5 pts  v     Shropshire & Herefordshire 7.5 pts

Congratulations to Shropshire & Hereford on securing the trophy and best wishes to both sides for the rest of the season.  Finally, thanks to everyone at Dudley GC for hosting the event and thanks to Luke Perry (U14’s Manager & U16’s Assistant Manager) for his help and support on the day.
