Gloucestershire U14’s v Worcestershire U14’s
The U14 team travelled to beautiful Stinchcombe Hill GC in Gloucestershire on Sunday 18th June 2023. The weather was amazing once again and we were very fortunate to avoid the forecasted storms throughout the day. The course was playing hard and the greens were running particularly fast which made for some great matchplay golf.
In the first match for Worcestershire we had two of our more experienced players in Max Wesley and Beau Langford. The quality of this match was very high and the Worcestershire boys were one down at the turn. It was early in the back nine they started to fight back and after winning three holes on the bounce Beau held the crucial putt on the 17th to win the match 3&1. In the next match our captain Alex Perry partnered Alex Mcveigh. It was a tricky start despite gross pars on the first three holes they found themselves two down. An unbelievable 8 iron shot from Alex Mcveigh on the tricky 6th saw the Worcestershire boys make birdie and draw level. The boys then took a firm hold of the match to go two up on the 16th after a fine approach shot from Alex Perry and his partner then held the putt on the 17th to win the match 3&1. The closet match throughout the day saw Matty Griffiths partner Oskar Nielsen. The Worcestershire boys were two up early on only to find themselves three down with five to play. They showed great determination to take the match down the last hole and despite a gross par from Oskar they narrowly lost. The fourth match featured Leo Edwards and Nicholas Campbell. The pair were down the entire front nine and after being three down through 10 holes they fought back to all square by the 14th hole. They were soon up against it again after losing both the 15th and 16th but an excellent birdie from Leo on the 16th and a birdie from Nicholas on the 17th saw them go on and draw the match. The final match saw the in-form partnership of Will Andrews and Logan Lawless dominant at this level again. They were up early on and Logan finished the match on the 14th green after going birdie, par, birdie to secure a 6&4 win for Worcestershire.
Congratulations to the team for another fine performance and another great win. The player of the day had to be Nicholas Campbell for his battling performance and positive attitude throughout. My thanks go to the course and the opposition as the match was played in a great spirit. Finally, I would like to thank our junior organiser Mark Hewlett Snr for all his hard work behind the scenes and to Mark Evans and Clive Werrett for their invaluable help on the day.
